Hello,

My name is Joyce and I now have 7 snakes (2 Ball Pythons, Honduran Milk, 2 boas and 2 new snakes that I am unsure as to what exactly they are so I am here asking for help! I have posted here a couple times, but thought I would re-introduce myself for the new folks. Started very young at age 17 with a very big burm, and though I have not had a burm since, I love the boids, and have been handling on and off for about 20 years being more active in snake care the last decade. Still learning as I go, and I tend to be more of a ‘rescuer’ than a ‘collector’ so my emphasis is on getting snakes out of bad situations, and thus far each one I have ‘rescued’ with an intention to foster, has become a personal animal. I am also a belly dancer that just recently started dancing with my snakes that can tolerate the handling, noises, and scents involved. I think I am at my max with 7 though!

Anyway, I picked up a very sweet little boa over the weekend. I bought him, a first for me (not adopting or rescuing). This was my first ever 'snake purchase' (not a rescue, or a hand me down/abandoned snake). He is quite young, and while I had one current snake (of my then 5) that is gentle enough for possible education and/or dancing with, that one was a rescue that was already about 3-5 years old when I got him and did have a history of 'biting' so I think I can really only dance with him (Only I would be in danger that way) and am not sure he would be a great candidate for education. So, I would really like to start with a very young snake and get to know him from a young age to ensure of temperament for what I would like to do with him (education and dance).

The people who sold the new baby him to me are "getting out of snakes" and "more into beardies" and they also had this little Central American (they claim) that was coiling back and hissing violently and striking at the tank when approaching him and apparently would strike when being handled. To approach him, it looks just like he is terrified and is in a situation that is stressing him out (he has no hide, and temps seem all wrong), and so I considered getting him as well. They said I can 'have him for cheap' and I am really considering taking this little guy and trying to make his life nice.

So I picked up both snakes on Friday after work and have got them settled in, but would like to better identify each one so I am asking for some help!

According to him, the snake is a female (he got this from the petstore he purchased her from several years ago). Anyway, she's very small, about the size of a red rat snake and is about 5 years old. She's maybe 4 feet long and doesn't have much girth on her. He only feeds her about 3 mice at a time (but I forgot to ask how often she's fed. Anyway, my friend has been feeding her for him from time to time. I already told her she should switch her to rats if she'll take them. I'd like to see her get some girth on her but how big of a rat should she get? I was thinking it should be slightly larger than her girth, as I'm afraid too big would make her regurgitate. Is this correct? Is she stunted or will she eventually reach her full size? He's currently got her in a small tank so I told my friend to look into getting a bigger tank.

Someone said that it was a great idea, would save money in the end, and healthy for the snake. Anyone have some ideas or thoughts about this. Any large cage recommendations?

He is now ready to go off fuzzy mice, but I can't find anything inbetween fuzzys and large frozen mice in stores. I was going to order from ratsicles.com (I've heard good things about rats) but since shipping is around $30 an order and I am a little timid with the quantity to buy.

So the Question: Anyone have tips, suggestions, past experiences... How fast will he grow? I was planning on ordering 10 penny size and 10 quarter size... Would it take about 10 weeks for him to grow out of penny size food? I know this is a tough question and if I have to reorder and/or throw out/give away food I will obviously do it for my little baby, but I wanted some sort of reference point anyways. Thanks!!!!

can anyone speak to the difference in disposition between boas and king/milk snakes? in my experience, red tail boas love to cuddle and move at a slow, predictable pace ideal for dancing with. but i'm concerned about not being able to care for a snake that gets over 6' by myself, which is why a king or milk snake might be a better alternative. i don't have much experience with those breeds - the only one i met was way too squirmy and fast for me.

are all current boa owners prepared for a 2-persons-to-handle size and a 20-30 year life span? i'm fascinated by people who can make this commitment, not sure if i could. any veterans who can speak to it?

My female is about 3 feet long, and my mail is a little over 2 feet. Im so happy with them. Haven't been able to hold the male very much just yet... his eyes are clouded over. But the female is extremely personable... a bit stubborn, but otherwise a sweetheart. YAY!!! Ive wanted snakes for such a long time.

I do have one question though..... the people that had them before were feeding them mice, but they would break the mouses neck first. Should I continue to do this, or should I maybe put a mouse in there, and keep an eye on it, see if my baby's will be able to profitiantly hunt or not???

Cocoa, the Red Tailed Boa and Monty the Nile Monitor, both 1 1/2 years old are looking to find new homes as soon as possible. Their owners are unexpectedly moving out of state and have no way to take them with them. They both come with their own homemade habitat (cage) with lights and waterdishes and other climbing things. Please help us find good homes soon. Thanks from the reptiles and their humans... Respond to the email address above or call (510)777-1561 and ask for Linda or Darrin
