Boy I just know I'm going to make friends bringing this up...
Anyway, I just moved out into the boon docks and am looking for a substrata to replace the calcisand I've been using, as some research has just enlightened me to the fact that calcisand is not the most highly recommended substrata. I've heard of "no print newspaper", but where in the hell do you get it?

Thanks for your time.

We used small wood shavings. Feedings were done out of cage, so we didn't worry about shavings being caught in the mouth. I am currently looking into this forest mulch from T-Rex. I use it for my tarantula, and it is nice.

I moved away from shavings and use a recycled newspaper strata that all my snakes have gone bonkers for. They push it around, bury themselves, and curl up on it.

It's ph neutral. Absorbs really well, dosn't retain moisture. All around it's been working really nice. Easier to clean up as well, and it's cheap.

I use ExoTera Jungle Earth. its a little harder to clean up but my Two peruvian Red tails love it and when you soak it, it ups the humidity and they can burry themselves in it if you give them a deep enough layer. and it looks great in the terarium.

I use paper towels. I think they're awesome.

You can use newspaper with print too, but you can get newspaper with out printing at moving stores that sell boxes and other packing stuff.

You can also get no-print paper from a printer. They can only use the rolls down so far and they toss the rest. I used to live above a guy who worked for the local paper, and he would bring home the roll ends for us for *all sorts* of uses. Though I never used it as substrate. :)

Craft paper works well and can be bought in massive rolls for quite cheap. I prefer to use finely shredded aspen, since it tends to hold humidity better.

I believe a 30lb bag of their dustless/miteless aspen is about $10 something....
    (yes, that's right, THIRTY pounds)

This looks like an old thread, but since it has a recent post, I figured I'd add to it.

I use towels for substrate. They hold humidity, clean up easily, and are reusable. Overall, economically friendly. Not as pretty as natural materials, but it saves me money and cleaning time.
