Has anyone here had any experience in keeping colombian rainbow boas? I've had one for about 5 years now and I have yet to meet another person that had one. I've got my Zaphod setup in a 55 gallon aquarium with jungle earth substrate, a rock den, and a kitty litter pan for water (best fit I could find for the setup). Any suggestions in improving his habitat or perhaps ideas for a new one would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 9:01 AMMine is a Brazilizan, and she likes lots and LOTS of humidity! She will actually burrow sometimes if she's feeling grumpy. I have her set up in a corner aquarium that is almost completey sealed, with an ivy plant in there that is taking over, I do some cleaning and refresh her orchid bark upper layer, but i think I've managed to do a general simulation of the tropical rainforest floor with the coconut bark base and a constant recycle of the water due to the humidity recycle. She is healthy and beautiful (a bit snappy tho-but hey-they are sometimes). I looked at the Columbians, but like the brazilians better....ok-my 2 cents! Kay -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 2:09 PMJust a tightly sealed terrarium with a natural cycle of plant respiration and humidity accumulation that drips back into the soil and waters the plant again. She hardly uses her water dish.

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 3:02 PMI have a Brazilian Rainbow Boa, but they are very similar to Columbians.
I would just say to make sure your top is covered to hold in humidity. I am not familiar with jungle earth substrate. I use towels.
You know, a great place to find out TONS of info on Rainbow boas is in the Kingsnake.com forums. Some of the country's leading experts on Rainbows post on their Boa: Rainbow forum. I have learned a tremendous amount about the care of my snake from them.

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Fri, March 25, 2005 - 10:31 AMI've been extremely happy with my colombian. They're not as colorful as the brazilians, but still very attractive snakes. The best advice I can give is handle the snake as much as possible especially when they're young. If you let them get used to being on you, they'll be much nicer as they get older. You can also get a snake used to eating pre-killed prey if you get them started young. Mine has been on pre-killed for almost 4 years now and he is extremely mellow.
Good luck.

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Fri, March 25, 2005 - 10:35 PMyeah Amazon that;s what i have been reading...around 6 feet at the most. sounds better to me than 11ish for a red tail. my ball python will be about 6 feet when she is full grown too. that's managable i think. -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Sat, March 26, 2005 - 12:41 PMIf they get much longer than you are tall, you have to think about who is in control.
"I should probably go feed the snake...he's been looking at me with a hunger that makes me feel uncomfortable." -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Sun, March 27, 2005 - 8:38 AMSomthing to keep in mind, not only do they max out at around 6 feet, but they stay relatively thin. I have a girlfriend with a red tail that is as big around as my thigh, but my rainbow, only a foot shorter, isn't even as big around as my forearm.
I have Eve in my photos, and she is about 5 feet long. You can see the size relative to that length there. -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 8:20 AMYes, Eve is a Brazilian. The Brazilians have the orange tone, whereas the Columbians tend towards the brown. They all have that amazing rainbow sheen, though.
Above I posted a link to the Rainbow Boa forum at Kingsnake.com - There are so many pictures on that site of all Rainbow breeds ranging in color from tan, brown, red, to orange. They are really a spectacular snake. It's a fun forum to browse for the pics alone, not to mention the bottomless pit of information that can be gathered there. Seriously, read up before purchasing. They are a higher maintenance snake than other constrictors due to humidity requirements. -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 6:00 PMyeah i was noticing that about them from where i was getting info. what kind of lid do you use on yours? i have Jades habitat half covered in plastic but ball pythons aren't as touchy about humidity. -

Re: Colombian Rainbow Boas
Wed, March 30, 2005 - 6:11 AMYoua re very right. My Ball requires much less humidity observation.
Right now I have a screen top covered with plexi-glass to kep the humidity in. I am upgrading tanks soon to all plastic.
